The LANWAR History
LANWAR, founded in 1998 in Louisville, KY, is one of North America’s longest-running LAN parties. What began as a local gathering has evolved into a major gaming event, attracting players nationwide. The focus remains on fun, community, and competition, offering an experience that online gaming cannot replicate. LANWAR is run by dedicated volunteers, ensuring an inclusive and engaging environment for all attendees.
1998 - 2001
Founding & Early Years

LANWAR began in 1998 at the University of Louisville with 90 attendees and classic games like Quake II, StarCraft, and Half-Life. Events quickly grew, surpassing 500+ participants by 2001, making it one of the largest LAN parties outside Texas. Attendees enjoyed a switched network connection per player, dedicated game servers, and 30-hour gaming marathons.
2002 - 2005
Expansion and MillionManLan

In 2002, LANWAR launched MillionManLan (MML) to expand its scope. Originally conceived as a bi-coastal event, MML evolved into a six-day mega-LAN in Louisville. Attendance soared past 1,000+ gamers by MML2 (2003), attracting sponsors like AMD, NVIDIA, and ASUS. These events featured tournaments, tech showcases, and nonstop gaming, cementing LANWAR as a key player in the gaming community.
2006 - 2007
Esports and the WSVG Era

LANWAR partnered with the World Series of Video Games (WSVG) and the Cyber Professional League (CPL) in 2006–07, hosting pro tournaments in Counter-Strike, Quake 4, and Warcraft III. These events brought esports legends and major sponsors, making LANWAR a recognized name in competitive gaming. LAN-X, a console gaming section, debuted during this era, expanding LANWAR’s audience to console games.
2008 - 2019
Evolution in the Broadband Era

As broadband gaming rose, LANWAR adapted by re-emphasizing in-person experiences, diverse tournaments, and community activities. Events included competitive brackets in League of Legends and CS:GO, alongside fun side activities like case mod contests and Mario Kart races. Attendance stabilized around 300–400 gamers, reflecting the event’s loyal fanbase.
2020 - Present
Recent Years and Current Era

LANWAR’s 2020 January event was right before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic halted two events but LANWAR was able to pick back up its gaming tradition in the summer of 2021. LANWAR 73 (2025) continues the tradition, offering a mix of modern esports and retro gaming. While embracing new generations of gamers, LANWAR remains committed to its roots—offering an authentic, in-person gaming experience focus on the gaming community.
